href="http://www.gartner.com/it/page.jsp?id=1529214" target="_blank">$58 billion within three years. IDC reported that 10.9 billion apps were downloaded in 2010 and projects that more than <a

A mobile app turns our smartphone into a stockbroker, cookbook, personal shopper, and accountant.

When it comes to building buzz and monetizing apps, nothing plays as significant a role as the app trailer. With over 350,000 iPhone apps and approximately 300,000 Android applications on the market to date, simple screenshots and wordy explanations aren’t enough to make an application stand out.

The 1-2 minute video trailer is one of the few ways a potential customer can experience an application before downloading it. Done right, trailers communicate what an app is all about and trigger the urge to buy and/or download. In just the last couple of years, the mobile app industry has given rise to a whole new world of supporting applications and a proliferation of services and tools to help app developers build these uber-important app trailers.

We’ve seen a full range of application trailers, everything from low-budget demos to big budget productions. Flipboard, for example, showed just what’s possible with some clever editing, creativity, a great soundtrack and a little humor, as did the videos for The Heist.

<object

To help your application stand out in today’s ocean of mobile apps, there are many resources at your disposal.

Useful software for video production includes iMovie (available as part of the iLife suite and as an iPad app) Apple’s Final Cut Pro, AVID, and both AfterEffects and Premiere Pro from Adobe.

When it comes to creating app demo videos, some great examples of helpful software packages include Sound Stage, SimFinger, Snapz Pro X, iSowU HD, Xtranormal and Prezi. Whichever platform you’re working on, there should be something there to suit you.

Finally, to create great screencasts, check out software programs like ScreenCastsOnline, Copernicus or Telestream ScreenFlow.

If, however, you don’t have the time, expertise or inclination to create your own trailer, you can hire a freelance video producer or firm to produce a customized demo. These experts not only handle the technical and creative aspects of video editing and animation, but they can help you determine the most compelling way to show your app.

Using Clixtr on Thanksgiving

Holidays

How-To

Thanksgiving
<guid

Turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, pecan pie, stuffing, corn, oh man, I could go on. Unfortunately, my parents will be about 8,200 miles away in the desert that is the Middle East, chowing down on baklava (which, by the way, is really good). I’ve never had a Thanksgiving without my parents, so while I’m sad I won’t get to spend this Thanksgiving with them, I can still share my Thanksgiving with my parents in real-time. Clixtr lets me break down the barrier of distance by letting me spend Thanksgiving with my parents without them being in physical proximity to me. I’ve already told them to go to an area with a good dial-up connection (remember those?), and view my Thanksgiving stream while it’s going on. I also have a religious holiday on Friday (no, not Black Friday). My parents in turn, will be able to upload photos of celebrations in the Middle East, and it’ll be as if I’m right there experiencing the holiday with them.

Thanksgiving and holiday events created on Clixtr let family and friends share their photos without going through the hassle of emailing photos to each person at Thanksgiving dinner. We’ve all been there. Each guest at Thanksgiving dinner wants to take pictures. And it’s likely you won’t see half of those pictures ever again (there goes that new profile picture). Besides, who has the time to email out photos to each person that’s attended Thanksgiving dinner? It’s also inefficient to receive 10 different links from guests to their own Thanksgiving album, and then go to each link. Clixtr solves both problems. One person can create an event on Clixtr, and Clixtr being location-based, allows guests to find the event under nearby. Or, the event creator could invite guests via text or email to the Thanksgiving event.

Whether you have family members on the other side of the world and are unable to celebrate a feast with them, or you want an easier way to share photos from an event with loved ones, Clixtr allows you to do both. It’s free for the iPhone and on the web.

Come celebrate Thanksgiving with us on Clixtr. Happy Thanksgiving!
